HEAD INJURIES When people are involved in a motor vehicle collision, or other traumatic event, they can suffer a head injury that leads to a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Seemingly minor impacts can create these devastating injuries. The most common head injuries are open head injuries and closed head injuries. Open head injuries are injuries that puncture or break the skull and allow air into the skull. A closed head injury is an injury that does not puncture the skull. A concussion, or loss of consciousness is an example of a closed head injury. Head injuries can cause traumatic brain injuries. A mild traumatic brain injury can adversely effect the thinking, personality, or emotional state of the victim.	In more severe brain injuries, the injured person might lose the ability to think at a high level, they might lose the ability to process information rapidly, they might have short and long term memory loss, and they may lose the ability to care for themselves.
